-Geiranger is crazy busy like Bombay, Valldal is so much better!
The Indian man standing next to us in the lobby was delighted with beautiful, yet tranquil Valldal. After visiting considerably busier Geiranger, he appreciated the peace and quietness of Valldal. He was also extremely pleased with his stay at Valldal Fjordhotell. After hearing his positive words, we could hardly wait to explore the hotel ourselves.
A great welcome
We arrived at Valldal towards the end of our 10-day road trip in Norway. On arrival, the young receptionists at Valldal Fjordhotell greeted us in the best way possible. More personal than you often experience, but still both professional and efficient. A lovely start to our stay!
A spotless room
When we opened the door to the room, we were instantly impressed. The room appeared completely new (the hotel opened just over a year ago) and looked spotless. The interior was modern and fresh, and the size of the room was good. A small fridge would have been great, but that is just a minor detail. Furthermore, all rooms at Valldal Fjordhotell are on the ground floor, and each room has a patio with a table and chairs.
A dinner on the pricey side
The hotel restaurant was adjacent to the lobby but still had a relaxing and nice atmosphere. Also contributing to the ambiance was the beautiful views of the fjord. The menu offered an appetizer, two main courses as well as two desserts. In other words, not a wide selection, but this is understandable in a relatively small hotel. We had a main course and a dessert each and were pleased with all the four dishes we ordered. With that said, we felt that the price was a bit on the high side, and would have wished for a slightly less pricey option as well.
Breakfast with a view
The next day, we woke up to sunshine and twenty degrees Celsius. To fully enjoy the nice weather, we decided to have breakfast outside by the fjord. The sea was completely calm with reflections of the sun and mountains. We could very much understand the Indian man’s enthusiasm for Valldal.
A visit to the breakfast buffet impressed us further. The offerings were on par with what you normally see in far larger hotels, and the quality was top notch. A special mention must be given to the local strawberries, which are the best we have ever tasted. The food was deliciously presented, and the buffet was continually refilled until the announced breakfast time was over.
Quiet location with spectacular scenery
As we arrived at the hotel late in the evening, we did not have the opportunity to check out much of what Valldal town center has to offer. However, we had a great evening walk on the promenade next to the fjord and barely met any other people. Valldal might not be the place to visit for nightlife, but instead offers tranquility and marvelous nature.
Speaking of nature, a half-hour drive from the hotel is the mighty Gudbrandsjuvet with its impressive views. A walkway has been built around the waterfall, making the beautiful scenery accessible to all. We highly recommend a visit here.
A hotel of international standard in small Valldal
We were very pleased with our stay at Valldal Fjordhotell. Located in a small strawberry village, the hotel still delivers a product of international class. Valldal Fjordhotell seems to have many young local employees, who combine great service with charm and sincerity. We give Valldal Fjordhotell a big thumbs up!
Don’t miss!
If you are lucky enough to visit Valldal during the strawberry season, you must try the incredibly sweet red treats.
Tips:
Have your breakfast outdoors.
